A FLIGHT TO ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE- Ninth Issue, May, 2007

Rajiv Goyal, General Manager AAI (Engg-Projects) Rajasthan

Have you ever thought what would happen if the runway collapsed when a load of approximately 1 Lac Kg weighing aircraft (A310) makes a landing on the runway. Let me show you a glimpse of what could go wrong. In order to ensure that this does not happen.

Civil Engineering has gone a long way today and the brilliance of Civil Engineering can be seen in all aspects of airport constructions. State-of-the-art Airports are built today all over the world and India as well.

In Rajasthan, two State-of-the-art Airports are being constructed today at Jaipur and Udaipur. They are expected to be completed and made operational for passenger use by 2008.

The foundation stone for new Terminal Building Complex of Maharana Pratap Airport, Udaipur was laid by Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation, Sh. Praful Patel on 15 Feb 2006. The Terminal Building will contain about 600 passengers at a time. The approximate plinth area of the building is – Ground Floor: 8000 Sq M
First Floor: 3600Sq M
Second Floor: 700 Sq. M

The building will have a space framed/ steel tubular truss roofing system, aluminum composite panel external finish, SAS metal false ceiling and granite and green marble flooring among many other things. Also two escalators, two elevators and two aerobridges would endeavor to serve the passengers along with online X-Ray screening departure conveyor system.

Let me share with you a reasonably work of excellence enacted by Civil Engineers during lifting and transportation of trusses from one side of the present building to another side , numbering 8, each weighing about 40-45 tones and length of approx 70 meter miles the length to football field. Finally, after making tracks like railway tracks on one sides of terminal building, and another on roof of one of the buildings, the first truss was lifted and elevated to a level higher than building height with the help of special cranes on two sides. Then movement could be given after lifting the truss on tracks for erecting at the right location of the support. A few photographs as below show the truss in work.

The foundation stone for new International Terminal Building at Jaipur Airport was laid by Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation, Sh. Praful Patel on 29th Dec 2006. The proposed new Terminal Building will be a glass and steel structure having various passenger friendly facilities such as central air conditioning, escalators and passengers lifts.PA systems, online baggage handling, aerobridges, CCTV and other facilities. These are of International standards. Along with this building, the construction of new apron to cater for 3 Code”E” aircraft, 3 Code “D” and 4 four Code “C” aircraft with link Taxiways to operate international flights from/to Jaipur are under construction. A parallel taxi track connecting the new apron with the Runway has been planned to be executed in two phases. The extension of Runway from the existing 9000 ft to 12000 ft for operating Boeing 747 aircraft is under consideration by Airports Authority of India.

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, which is located at a distance of 260 Km from Delhi and 225 Km from Agra has become an important tourist destination in Rajasthan making one corner of the Golden Triangle (Delhi-Jaipur-Agra).

Airports Authority of India is proud to build two State-of-the-art Airports in Rajasthan and add colour to the rich historic cultural heritage of Rajasthan.
