There is lot of happenings on the aviation front in theAsia Pacific region.

The rankings of the world’s busiest airports for 2011 show key developments and lasting changes in global aviation. Although the world’s busiest airport by total passenger movements, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, continued to hold off Beijing, the world’s second busiest airport, in 2011, according to Airports Council International (ACI). It is, however, expected that Beijing, driven by exponential GDP growth, will overtake Atlanta in 2012, ending the airport's 14-year reign in the top spot.

While Beijing Capital is the dominant airport in China, it is on track to become be the world’s busiest hub by the end of this decade, leaving London and even ambitious Dubai in its wake. And new developments will ensure the city of Beijing has an airport in the top spot: its new airport at Daxing, south of Beijing, could have up to nine runways and ultimate capacity to handle around 370,000 passengers per day, or a staggering 135 million passengers p/a. This would increase capacity at Beijing area airports to around 220 million p/a – almost a quarter of a billion passengers.

ACI Asia Pacific reported (14-May-2012) a 10.8% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers at airports in the Asia Pacific region while traffic growth at Middle Eastern airports showed "an even more remarkable increase" of 16.4% in Mar-2012. The industry association noted traffic at Japanese airports have "significantly rebounded" from the Mar-2012 earthquake and tsunami with Tokyo Narita Airport reporting the strongest growth at +30.3% followed by Tokyo Haneda (+28.8%) and Osaka Kansai (+20.3%). Beijing Airport continued to report the highest passenger numbers in the region, at 6.6 million passengers, followed by Tokyo Haneda at 5.8 million passengers. Cargo volume at Asia Pacific airports fell 1.9% while cargo traffic at Middle Eastern airports increased 0.8% in Mar-2012. Hong KongShanghai PudongSeoul IncheonTokyo Narita and Dubai airports remained the top five airports in the region in terms of cargo volume.

India has also significantly played its role in modernizing its airports.Some more plans are in the pipe lines.
Buoyed by the Rs 30,000 crore private sector investment in airport projects during 2007-12, the Government of India plans to attract Rs 50,000 crore more in the 12th Plan from private and foreign sources to push some big ticket projects this year itself.
The Government estimates that a whopping Rs 67,500 crore would be required to develop and modernise airports during the 12th Plan period, of which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) would contribute Rs 17,500 crore.
While the balance of around Rs 50,000 crore has to be brought in by the private sector, official sources said "this large amount may require significant contribution from global investors as well."
Keeping in mind this big ticket investment needed over the next five years, the Government has evolved a draft policy blueprint on tariff regulation at a large number of airports which are not under the ambit of the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) that currently regulates tariff for only 15 of them.
